Martha Sue Childress-Callaway MHS '57
Family Information: Husband, William T. Callaway, Susan Kay House. Daughter
Occupation: High School Counselor
What I have been doing:
We have been married only three years but between us we have five children
and six grandchildren. Cody, Tyler & Ryan Callaway, LeAnne McCullough,
Benjamin Holmes and Dana Killmer. We live in Phoenix and both enjoy very
interesting careers as well as an active personal life. Bill is an
artist-blacksmith and I am a school counselor. We enjoy attending concerts,
theater, art exhibits and movies. We also travel to many interesting places
with the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America, Bill does some
demonstrating and we both worked to chair the national conference in 2000 at
Northern Arizona University last July. The conference was a tremendous
success, with over 2000 blacksmiths attending along with 400 family members.
Conferences are held biannually with the next one in 2002 in Wisconsin. I am
sure we will be there. At one point we had an art gallery in downtown
Phoenix but gave it up for the time being to devote our energy to the ABANA
conference. We plan to travel to Mexico soon. While there we will visit a
metal smith school, observe coppersmiths at work and enjoy the local culture.
Our neighborhood is forming an association in order to gate our street, add
underground utilities and further improve our neighborhood. It is fun
working together and also makes us a cohesive group. We enjoy time with
family. Bill's mother still lives in Miami, she is 88 now. Many other
members of our family live in Miami so we are frequent visitors. I have a
daughter, Linda in Oregon so we are also annual visitors there. We enjoy
the Oregon coast, as well as other places there. I worked at Miami High as
a bookstore manager from 1979-1988 when I went to Globe High School and
taught social studies for five years. Then I returned to Miami High School
as a counselor until 1998 when I met Bill and moved to Phoenix. Actually
Bill & I went to high school in Miami together, graduating in 1957. He then
went to the Marines and I married another, raised a family and so did he.
We met again at our 40th class!
reunion in 1997, fell in love and married in March 1998. We are blissfully
happy. We wish MHS and the class of 1975 all could be as happy as we are
now. Love, Martha Childress-Callaway
