Family Information: Shawn Faye Smith (Class of 76)
Married 1978, Kevin Jonathan 1982, Samantha Erin 1988
Occupation: The University of Arizona Police Department,
Police Commander
Address: Tucson, AZ
What I've Been Doing:
Larry said I should try and rival his bio but I don't think
that is possible nor do I choose to. And I don't want to sing at the next
reunion. After graduation some of the gang (Greg, Fred, Leslie) all went to the
UA. Some of us stayed, (longer than others) some of us didn't. I was one that
didn't and returned to Globe. I got the police bug in late 1976 and pursued it
by becoming a reserve officer at Miami PD. I graduated from the academy in 1977
and right after in 1978 went to work for the Globe PD. During my adventures (and
there were many) at Globe PD I met Shawn while going to Gila Pueblo and we got
married in the summer of 1978. For a time I went to work for Pinto Valley Mine,
working in the assay lab while still working for Globe PD as a reserve officer
and volunteering for Tri-City Fire Department. During the four years leading up
to 1983 I had a great time but due to the economy in the area Shawn and I
decided to explore our options elsewhere. After applying to numerous police
department throughout the state, the University was the the first to call and we
packed up our stuff and our 1-year old and made the move to Tucson. I thought I
might go back to school an the UA posed some very interesting possibilities. We
have been there ever since. The decision was scary but looking back the right
one to make. I have now worked for the UA for over 23 years now. During that
time I have been able to experience things Globe just could not offer. I have
been able to meet people from all walks, including a variety of government
officials, federal to state to international, US Cabinet members, one presidents
dog at the White House and experience events and advanced training and education
I only dreamed of. My travels have taken me all over the US and once to Canada.
Shawn has worked for the UA for 22 years and currently works for the Director of
the AZ Cancer Center. Deciding to finished my education, I obtained my Masters
in Education (but from NAU). Over the years I worked myself up through the ranks
of the department to my present rank of Commander where I oversee a Division
within the department. In 1996 I attened the FBI Academy for three months of
advanced training, living at the academy in Quantico, VA with new FBI and DEA
recruits for about three months. For a short time in 2000 I was the Chief of
Police at the UA while we looked for a replacement of our retiring chief. Now as
my working career winds down, Shawn and I are enjoying more time away from our
work. We hunt, boat and sometimes fish and every year, twice a year make a one
week treck to Phoenix to enjoy the NASCAR races. We frequent Globe quite often
visiting our parents and friends still there. Jonathan is grown up now and
trying to finish up school. Samantha will be a senior at Mountain View HS next
year and believe it or not will graduate with Greg Sims' son. They didn't even
know Greg and I went to school together. It was a hoot when Sam found out. I see
Greg once in a while. Well this bio should be a vast improvement over my one or
two lines that now exist. Hopefully I can keep it updated now that Larry has
made it easier to do on line.
Memories of MHS:
Letterman's Club initiation,
both on the receiving and giving end. Building floats at Franceen's house and
wrecking my motorcycle. Hanging out in the Concentrator room.
